13 NovSee the Statue of Liberty? Check!

While Andrew and I were in New York, we decided we definitely wanted to see the Statue of Liberty. Did you know you have to book months in advance if you want to go inside? We did not. Luckily though, we were still able to book tickets to both Liberty and Ellis islands. We opted for the audio tour on each, because who doesn’t like to learn a little something?

We decided Sunday morning of our trip would be the best time to go. We woke up bright and early, only to find that it was cold and slightly rainy. Sweet! We were going anyway.

After desperately trying to find some coffee that wasn’t Starbucks, we made it to the subway. Unfortunately the line that we were told to take to Battery Park only went half way there, and after a certain point we had to get off and take a shuttle. What? Nobody mentioned a shuttle … scary!

Somehow we managed, and after taking an impromptu shuttle tour through the Wall Street area, we made it to Battery Park. We got in line for the ferry, and I think this is where the rain helped us, as it was hardly crowded at all!

Who sails in the rain??

The ferry ride was really great, despite the rain.

big-umbrella

Andrew and the SUPER giant umbrella. Don't worry, it came in handy!

Our hotel gave us a giant umbrella which helped a lot. Andrew manned the video cam, while I took a million pictures.

skyline

NYC? Where??

See that there? That’s where the New York skyline is supposed to be. But it was just a tiny bit foggy that day.

Liberty Island

By the time we made it to the island, our jeans were sopping wet up to our knees, but no matter — it was time for the audio tour!

Of course Andrew had to get his "tourist shot!"

Lets just say the audio tour was a little bit … slow moving? Cheesy? Repetitive? Unnecessary. The statue however, was spectacular!

gift-shop

Fancy.

Before leaving Liberty Island, we had to check out the gift shop! Andrew found a fabulous new hat. Then it was off to Ellis Island.

ellis-island

On our way to Ellis Island. It was a wee bit windy!

Andrew was always having to turn around and make sure I didn't get left behind, as I was constantly stopping to take pictures!

Once we got there, we re-grouped a bit before heading off on the second audio-tour. This tour was actually great, and the museum would not have been nearly as interesting without it. So kudos to the Ellis Island audio-tour! It was really interesting to see just how much the people who came to the island to get to America really had to go through! It was so easy to be rejected, I don’t even know how so many people managed to get through.

heading-back

On our way back, still windy.

We spent quite a bit of time at the museum, but we did have other things on the agenda for the day (like Central Park!) so eventually we hopped back on the ferry, and made our way back. Both the statue and Ellis Island were totally worth going to see. If you’re ever in NYC, I definitely recommend you add it to your to-do list!
