20 Jun25. Finish an Old Knitting Project

So, about a year and a half ago Shayla and I were working the host stand at Nick’s Fishmarket. As business was slow, things would get quite boring, and on occasion I would work on a knitting project to keep from literally falling asleep right there at the host stand.

At one point while I was working on Christmas scarves, Shayla mentioned how awesome it would be if I knit her some legwarmers. I laughed, thinking of the 3 scarves I still had to finish in time for the holiday, mentally calculating how I could fit it in, and said I’d, “see what I can do.”

After some research I stumbled upon this pattern, which I thought would be perfect. I picked out some yarn purple yarn (Shayla’s favorite color!) and got started! Sadly, I only finished one legging by Christmas (and the three scarves I was working on!), and after the holiday I was so sick of knitting that I gave up on the project.

A few months later June rolled around, and I went, “Oh crap, Shayla’s birthday is coming up! I should finish those leggings!” and yet somehow only managed to finish another half-legging before her birthday. Bad friend!

Another year rolled by, and I completely forgot about the project as I moved from here to there, started new projects, and stumbled upon new distractions.

Finally, a few days ago I again remembered, “Oh hey, I should finish those leggings for Shayla!” Luckily only having a half a legging left, I knew I could bunker down and finish them.

After a little struggling to remember where exactly in the pattern I had left off, I finished them in just a few short hours. And thus became my #25, and first finished “old” project of the year. Woot!

10 JunPark #559

As if my street couldn’t get any more awesome (we have a beach one block south, and a lovely park on the lake one block north), somehow the city managed to fit another little park inbetween!

It’s a simple park, fenced in, with lots of grass and one path down to the edge of the the lake with four little benches for relaxing. I decided it was probably the perfect place for Zoey to burn some energy playing soccer!

This is her favorite ball in the whole wide world.

We played “soccer” for a good 45 minutes in the new park! Then we walked up to Berger Park to enjoy the sunset.

This is why I *heart* Chicago.

09 JunDragonflies and Helicopters

So earlier today Zoey and I were relaxing up at our favorite park, watching a group of dragonflies buzz about. As we were sitting there I smiled, remembering how they always remind me of miniature helicopters.

Suddenly I look up in the distance and think, “Wow, that is one BIG dragonfly!”

A second later my eyes focused, and as it got closer I realized …

This was my giant dragonfly.

05 JunThe Proper Way to Celebrate a Launch!

I’m so proud of Andrew!

For seven long month’s he’s worked extremely hard to overhaul and redesign his company’s website. If you check it out you’ll see his masterpiece in action! (Seriously, check it out — its lovely.)

He worked with an extremely talented team, and designed it down to the very last pixel. (Minus the ads and article graphics). Even if you accidentally in the wrong place you’ll get a little treat when you’re directed to one of his insanely clever error pages! Love it.

It was a long and grueling process, so after the multi-delayed launch date finally managed to happen we decided a good and proper celebration was in order!

Congratulations baby, you did good! :)

04 JunPrivate Beach

Here we are again at our favorite neighborhood spot, Berger Park. But this pretty little park just keeps getting better and better… let me show you why:

I recently discovered that beyond these rocks lies something pretty special ...

A tiny little stretch of land, a private beach ...

... where Zoey can play!

30 May16. Hit the Beach As Much As Possible

Perfect beach scene??

I think so!

I’d say so far we’ve done a pretty good job keeping up this goal. Here’s to plenty more beach days ahead!

17 May38. Knit a Baby Gift for KT’s Baby!

When KT told me she was pregnant I was SO excited for her! I knew I wanted to make a special blanket for her little “Booger,” so I poured over my knitting books and chose a lovely, albeit ambitious pattern.

It was  a great pattern, but it required more attention and counting than I tend to have the patience for. I struggled with error after error, un-knitting and re-knitting, trying to get through just a few complicated rows at a time without a mistake. Finally after months of struggling,  I realized I was never going to be able to finish at the rate I was going. So after a not-so-successful first attempt, I reevaluated and settled on the much simpler, but equally as beautiful “Mock Cables” pattern:

Multiple 4 +4

Row 1: K1, P2; *K2, P2; rep from * to last st, K1.
Row 2: K3; *P1, Yo, P1, K2; rep from * to last st, K1.
Row 3: K1, P2; *K3, P2; rep from * to last st, K1.
Row 4: K3; *P3, K2; rep from * to last st, K1.
Row 5: K1, P2; *K3, pass first st of sts just worked over last 2; P2; rep from * to last st, K1.

Repeat Rows 2-5 for pattern.

Using size 10 needles, I cast on 192 stitches and worked 168 rows using 1 1/2 skeins of Baby Bee: Sweet Delight Baby “Surfmommy” yarn. I modified the pattern a bit, by adding a 10 row seed stitch border (K1, P1, repeat) to each end, with 10 stitches at the beginning and end of each row to complete the sides.

Compared to the first attempt I felt this new blanket practically knit itself, it formed so quickly! Sadly, it wasn’t quite fast enough to make it in time for the baby shower, but luckily I wasn’t the only one with an unfinished present :) and I was able to finish it two weeks later, still in plenty of time for Baby Booger’s arrival.

Now that we’ve gone over the knitty-gritty details (lol, get it??), I present to you … Baby Farley’s Blanket!

Close-up of the front and border

Top to bottom: The pattern front, the seed stitch border, and the pattern back

This was the first baby blanket I’ve attempted, and once it go going, it was so much fun! The yarn was super soft, and such a different take on the traditional “baby blue.” I love the pattern, and I’ll definitely be using it in future projects.

Congratulations Katie and Andrew, can’t wait for Booger to make his appearance!

11 MayWorld’s Greatest Dad??

Andrew and I rented this movie to go with tonight’s dinner — Andrew’s delicious Pad Thai. He’d heard the movie was pretty good, but judging by the review’s on the cover of the case … we may be disappointed.

World's Greatest Dad with Robin Williams

I’ll let ya know — Pad Thai’s calling!

UPDATE: Well, I wouldn’t call it the “worst movie ever” … it was actually not so bad. Kind of funny, a little serious, nothing epic. But at least we enjoyed it. The Pad Thai however … was delicious, as usual! :)

Yum!

30 AprFull Moon Fire Dancing!

So Andrew heard through the grapevine that every full moon a bunch of people gather in Foster Park, and have a fire celebration. Drummers bring drums, dancers dance with fire, and its all around a good time.

So this week we decided to check it out … and look how awesome!

This is a girl hula-hooping fire! Gutsy.

Everyone gathers in a huge circle -- All the drummers sit on one side, and about 5-8 dancers rotate in and out. Here you can see two dancers (I think).

This guy in front was really good!

See?

Once the fire on whatever you're twirling, hooping, throwing-about goes out, you're turn is over!

I think this one looks like a dragon! Or Voldemort! Or Count Chocula!

Honestly, I think this is a fabulous idea. Luckily they meet once a month in the summer, whenever there’s a full moon. I think we’re totally going back! If you want to join us, check out the schedule. See ya there!

27 AprFull Moon

Gorgeous night up at Berger Park

The moon was huge tonight, but it was a little hard to capture with my not-so-fancy camera phone. Either way, Zoey and I enjoyed a lovely evening stroll under the moon.
